Many people notice that fat loss feels more difficult as they get older. What used to work in your 20s or 30s suddenly doesn’t seem to have the same effect. This can be frustrating, but it doesn’t mean your body is working against you.

As we age, a few things naturally change. Muscle mass tends to decrease if it isn’t maintained, daily movement often drops, and recovery can take a little longer. Hormones also play a role, particularly around stress and sleep.

One of the biggest mistakes people make is trying to fix this by doing more. More cardio, fewer calories, more sessions. Often, this just leads to fatigue and stalled progress.

Strength training becomes more important with age, not less. Building and maintaining muscle helps support metabolism, improves strength and makes everyday life easier. You don’t need extreme workouts, just consistent, well-structured sessions.

Nutrition also needs a more balanced approach. Eating too little can backfire, especially when combined with stress and poor sleep. Regular meals with enough protein and nutrients support energy levels and recovery far better than aggressive dieting.

Recovery matters too. Sleep, rest days and managing stress all have a real impact on fat loss. Progress isn’t just about what you do in workouts, but how well your body can adapt afterwards.

Fat loss over 40 isn’t about pushing harder. It’s about training smarter, eating consistently and building habits that support your body rather than fight it.

When the approach fits your lifestyle, results are still very achievable.
