“What If I’m Not Fit Enough?” – The Real Reasons People Don’t Start Training

Most people don’t avoid training because they’re lazy. They avoid it because they’re unsure where they stand.

One of the most common things I hear from people before they start training is:

“What if I’m not fit enough?”

And honestly, I get it.

A lot of people worry they’ll be judged, that they’ll be the least fit person in the room, or that they need to “get in shape first” before they even begin. Add in worries about money, time, or not knowing what to do, and it’s easy to see why so many people put it off.

But here’s the truth.

Nobody starts fit.

Every single person you see moving confidently around the gym started somewhere. Most of them started exactly where you are now: unsure, slightly nervous, and overthinking it.

The other thing people worry about is judgement. They imagine everyone is watching them.

In reality, nobody is.

Most people are too busy focusing on their own workout (or just trying to survive it) to pay attention to anyone else. And from my side of things, I’m not looking for perfect performance. I’m just looking for effort.

Some of the clients I’m proudest of didn’t start strong or confident. They started quietly, showed up consistently, and improved week by week. That’s what actually works.

You also don’t need to feel “ready”.

You don’t need new kit, a perfect routine, or loads of spare time. You just need to begin somewhere and keep it simple.

Money is another thing people often worry about, and that’s completely fair. But what I tend to see is that once people start prioritising their health, other choices naturally shift as well. That bottle of Malbec after a long day becomes a walk to clear your head. A Friday takeaway turns into cooking something decent at home. It’s not about cutting everything out, it’s just that your habits start to change without forcing it.

And once that happens, health becomes a bit addictive. In a good way.

If you’ve been hesitating because you feel like you’re not fit enough yet, that’s exactly why you should start now.

And if you want to ease into it, just reach out. I’m always happy to have a chat and help you figure out a starting point that feels manageable and realistic.

Because nobody starts confident. But everyone builds confidence once they begin.
